Utah Bluuegrass Festival

Last week was the 2009 Utah Bluegrass Festival at Snowbird. That meant we go to get up extra early to make it up Little Cottonwood Canyon to hear the boys play.

Skyler's group was first. Since he won 1st place in the novice division last year he had to compete in open. Open is any age and any skill level. He played great--espically since it was raining and blowing the entire time. Unfortunately he did not place this year (they only announce the top 3), but had a good time and did a fantastic job.
Next came the flatpick guitar. This is where Zachary competes. Last year he took 2nd in the
novice division, but he chose to compete in open. I think it was the lure of the $3000.00 acoustic guitar that they were giving away for first place that made up his mind. He got up there and in his own relaxed way owned the stage. We were very proud of him, but realized that he was up against some stiff competition. (These competitions are judged using 'blind judges', so you can't yell out the contestant's name or anounce anything about them.) He placed 2nd out of 10 in his field.
...that guy behind Zach took 3rd place. He was up against mostly adults and a few older teenagers.

So...maybe he didn't win the guitar...but you tell me...is that a happy boy?
