Happy Birthday Zach...two weeks late.

Zach turned 11 two weeks ago. We were not able to have his birthday party then so it was scheduled today. He was able to have some friends go to 'Jump On It'. A big warehouse filled with trampolines. The kids love it. I can't stand it.

Zach jumping over a mat.

Blowing out the candles.

My favorite picture. I love watching the boys get along. :)

Confessions of a pack rat

I came to a realization today that I am a pack rat. I also suffer from pack rat guilt. I don't know if this is a recognized medical condition, but I have it. I realized this today as I was cleaning off my kitchen counter. There is a thank you note from someone in the ward and I don't know what to do with it. I have read it, I don't have a particular emotional connection to this individual, yet I can't throw it away. I will never look for this letter again, but the thought of throwing it away causes anxiety. This is the time when I now share that this is not unique to this particular thank you note. I have kept ALL of the cards we received for our wedding (this was over 3 years ago). These are in a suitcase downstairs, and I can't bring myself to throw them away. I know that I need to let go, but for some reason.....

HELP!!

Sean's phobia

Sean has a phobia.
He is deatlhy afraid of a wrinkle in his clothes.
It is a race to the dryer once the buzzer goes off.
Too bad his wife doesn't care.
I love you Sean.

The curse of the red velvet cake

Tomorrow is Jordan's 9th birthday. He has been waiting and planning for 6+ weeks for his birthday party. I am admittedly a lazy mother. I do not believe on having a birthday party for friends every year, In fact I don't think in the past 3 years that I have done a friend birthday party for Jordan. Thus, the guilt won over. Sean and I planned a friend birthday party this week for him. We decided to have his party at....

He invited 3 friends from school and 2 cousins. Me being the resourceful (cheap) mother that I am decided to make his birthday cake. I, of course, procrastinated the baking part until this morning...late morning at that. So when it was done, I was more than behind. When I thought it was cool enough to remove from the pan......I quickly learned that I was wrong. The cake broke into 3 pieces on my stovetop. This was not my shining moment of the day, BUT I picked it up and put (smashed) it together the best I could. At this point there were a few thoughts running through my head. I could go and pick up a generic cake at the store and try to 'redecorate' it....bake another one (and be even further behind)...or try to make it work. Again my frugal side won out and I was determined to make it work. Sean brought out the fan for me and started to accelerate the cooling down process. Once it was cool enough I frosted it. I did pretty well until I got to the 'crumby' part (later known as the 'don't eat...too much frosting' part). There was not going to be any way to avoid it...I had crumbs in my frosting. Luckily for me I had planned well. I was going to put crushed oreo cookies (dirt) on top of the cake. I was pretty impressed with my finished creation.....

The treasure map under the cake...the treasure on top, and Oreo dirt to cover up all my mistakes.

.....At least they said it tasted good.

Happy Birthday Frankie!!!

Yesterday was Willard's birthday. I just wanted to wish him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and tell him how much I appreciate him. He did not have to step in and be a dad to me and my brothers and sisters the way he has over the last 15 years. It has taught me that you really can have a dad, and how to be a step-parent. He loves my mom, and that is all any of us kids can ask for. She deserves the best and she found it.
Frankie--thank you for everything. I love you.

Gone...but never to be forgotten.

Dear Grandpa, August 5, 2009

As I sit here and try to put my thoughts on paper there are so many different things that come to mind when I think about you.

Grandpa’s garden: I have never seen a more organized and weed free garden in my whole life. I remember going out to the garden at the house I grew up in, and taking it all for granted. Now that I am an adult I appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to grow a successful garden and I think about all you did to help feed us as we were growing up.
Music: From the piano to the violin and to your voice. Sunday night visits were always special when the barber shop quartet would get together and practice, or when you would play the Stinky old cadaver song. And once in a while you would pull out the old violin and play.
Service: Whether it is church or civic service, you have always been there to help someone out. You were the priesthood to my family when we did not have it in our home. You have been an example of unwavering temple service for I-don’t-know-how-many years. You showed us grandchildren the importance of serving a mission by going yourself.
I will always think about the time I spent with you and grandma…all by myself. I was so confused when grandma would tell me that I had to be quiet because you were working in the graveyard. And then you would be working on the swings. But I knew all along that you worked at Geneva. I thought that they must have a graveyard with swings. So confusing.
I just want to thank you for the example you have been to me. I have always known that you will be there whenever we needed anything. Your devotion to your family and your faith has shown me what is important in life.
THANK YOU

Suz

Take me out to the ball game....

Friday we had a chance to go to the Orem Owlz game with Nicole, Travis and Shelby. We sat on the 'berm' and had a blast.

Well...at least Shelby and Zach had a good time. But the best part was the fireworks after the game....

Utah Bluuegrass Festival

Last week was the 2009 Utah Bluegrass Festival at Snowbird. That meant we go to get up extra early to make it up Little Cottonwood Canyon to hear the boys play.

Skyler's group was first. Since he won 1st place in the novice division last year he had to compete in open. Open is any age and any skill level. He played great--espically since it was raining and blowing the entire time. Unfortunately he did not place this year (they only announce the top 3), but had a good time and did a fantastic job.
Next came the flatpick guitar. This is where Zachary competes. Last year he took 2nd in the
novice division, but he chose to compete in open. I think it was the lure of the $3000.00 acoustic guitar that they were giving away for first place that made up his mind. He got up there and in his own relaxed way owned the stage. We were very proud of him, but realized that he was up against some stiff competition. (These competitions are judged using 'blind judges', so you can't yell out the contestant's name or anounce anything about them.) He placed 2nd out of 10 in his field.
...that guy behind Zach took 3rd place. He was up against mostly adults and a few older teenagers.

So...maybe he didn't win the guitar...but you tell me...is that a happy boy?

Families are Forever

Yesterday we had the chance to celebrate as a family when my brother Steve and his family were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. It was the first time in a while that all 7 of us kids were together so we decided to mark the occasion with a picture.

Don't we all look alike??

But while we were there I also was able to get a good picture of Grandma and Grandpa Strong.

If my math is correct...it was 67+ years ago they were married there.

Congratulations Steve and Daniela...WE LOVE YOU!!

Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open house

Last night our family was able to go through the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. It was a neat experience to share that beautiful and amazing building with my husband and kids. The boys were less than enthused at the prospect of being in their suits and getting a picture taken...

I guess they will just have to get used to the fact that I like my camera.

A Promise Kept

This story starts about 3 years ago. Jordan asked me if he could cut a mohawk in his hair. We have done the "faux-hawk" many times, but I have always been able to get out of the true mohawk....that is until last time I took him to get his hair cut. It was so long and he looked so awful, but he would only agree to sit and get his hair cut if I promised him that when school was out I would cut his hair into a true-shaved on the sides-mohawk....so....

Before.....

And After...

Good thing it grows back.

Gift from my son.

Skyler brought me this flower from our bush out front. He knew I was having a stressful night tonight and wanted to make it better. He did a great job tonight and I am very proud of him.

The Memorial Day walk

Keeping with tradition...after the BBQ at Grandma and Grandpa Strongs house we went on our annual trip up the the cemetary. This year Jordan came with us. it was fun to be able to tell stories to my son about some of the people buried up there. It was also good to run into family members that we have not seen for quite a while. Here are some photos of the trip. I have many others...some of my sister Hilary that I am not posting due to a promise I made. So...Make sure she knows that they are not here. (Love you Hilary!!)

Zach and Skyler

Yes, Aunt Deanna---they are my boys. I can't take any credit for their talent. They have been taught by their grandparents for years and years.

For everyone else...here is a link to a little glimpse into my two oldest's talent.

http://www.deseretnews.com/photo/slideshow/1,0000,6175,00.html

I am extremely proud of these two. They sacrifice a lot of time practicing when I think they would rather be sleeping or playing outside. But it has paid off and

Here is the story...

AMERICAN FORK, Utah -- Don and Linda Davis have been playing fiddles for a long time. Now, their grandsons are doing the same.
The LDS couple not only has a bureau full of trophies and ribbons to show for it but two young boys well on their way to a lifetime of fiddlin' fun.The Davises, known locally as part of the Quintessential Quartet, noticed right away that their then-toddler grandson Skyler Beck had perfect pitch. He could whistle back a song he'd only just heard and would cry whenever anyone turned off his classical music. His little brother, Zach, has an innate sense of rhythm. Just hand him a pair of wooden spoons and stand back! Both boys are lucky that their grandparents picked up on their natural abilities.Nate Olsen, a professor of music at Brigham Young University who is currently studying in New York, said Skyler is one of the most talented young fiddlers he's had the opportunity to work with.
Zachary Beck plays guitar with his grandfather Don Davis at the Utah Old Time Fiddlers and Country Music Association annual Fiddlin' and Pickin' competition at Wheeler Farm in Murray on May 9. Photos: Mike Terry, Deseret News "The strong support of his family, his work ethic and his love of fiddle music have fine-tuned a unique ability in him," Olsen said. "I expect that he will continue to find great success and fulfillment in his playing."The boys practice with their grandparents every weekday morning and most weekends."They come here at 6:30 a.m. and practice until school," Linda Davis said."Supervised practicing is much more effective than individual practice," Don Davis said. "You can correct what they do wrong immediately."It seems to be working, because Skyler placed seventh among 68 in a national fiddle competition and first in the regional contest at Wheeler Farm. Meanwhile, Zach stands his ground just fine against adults with his guitar. (There hasn't been a youth category for guitarists prior to this coming year.)They're both totally comfortable on stage and under pressure. They're the ones cracking a smile or even cutting the rug during a competition. They play in parades, in blue grass festivals and for local events. The only time Skyler -- who is now 13 -- gets nervous is when he competes against a cute girl. He once got going too fast in a hoedown number and inexplicably switched over to another hoedown song. His grandmother didn't think the judges noticed, but she did."All of a sudden, he was playing something else," she said. "But it worked out OK and they are encouraged to improvise."Zach says he doesn't worry, even when he's lying on his back playing "The Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road."

Skyler recalls sawing away on a cardboard violin when he was just 2 years old. "I thought that I was big," he said.Zach was so anxious to be a part of things that he would come along to competitions and just sit for hours watching until he got big enough to compete."We went to a cowboy store (after a competition) and he pointed to a guitar and said that's what he wanted," Don Davis said. "He came home with a guitar."The Davises have thus far provided their grandsons with 12 instruments as they graduated from cardboard violins, wooden spoons and baritone ukeleles to serious violins and guitars. The boys help pay for them with the prize money they win.Their winnings also pay entry fees and for sheet music, some of which is difficult to find. And for competitions, they need a lot and a variety. The National Old-time Fiddler's Competition asks for three songs in four minutes -- a hoe-down number, a waltz and a tune of choice, which is usually a ragtime number."It's very specific," Linda Davis said. They can also have a lot of fun with feature numbers such as "Dead Skunk," which proved very popular with the audience, and "Dueling Democrats," which featured the grandparents and Skyler wearing masks of Bill and Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and a Super Delegate (Zach) with a "Vote for McCain" banner on his back. Skyler and Zach are aware that they do something few of their classmates and peers understand. They don't usually announce what they do to their friends -- who are often surprised when they discover the two of them are "famous" on the fiddling circuit."Sometimes they'll start making fun of me. If they do, I just punch 'em," Skyler said with a grin. The boys compete next in the National Fiddle Contest at Weiser, Idaho, on June 25; in September in Wellsville, Utah, as part of the Festival of the American West; and in Richfield, Utah, at the State Fiddle Contest.Get ready to rock.

YEAH SKYLER!!

Here are a few photo's of Skyler's lacrosse game from tonight.

I know that Skyler will not look at this, but if he ever does, I want him to know how proud I am of him and all he does. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be his 'evil' step-mom.

Temple Square

Today we had to drop Sean off at the airport and so we missed church. I decided to take advantage of being in Salt Lake and took the boys to Temple Square. I couldn't remember how long it had been since I was up there...let alone it not being at Christmas. I was very proud of my boys and how much they learned.
